I am immensely privileged to witness and be part of your journey, whether it's about self-discovery or enriching relationships or simply needing a safe space to be yourself. I am committed to guiding you through the paths that lead to where you want to be.

  • My individual counselling services are rooted in a client-centred approach, affirming your role as the expert on your life. I combine a variety of therapeutic methods to suit your unique needs, focusing on empowering you to overcome challenges and achieve personal growth. Techniques include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness strategies, existential and narrative therapies, and a keen awareness of the environmental and systemic factors impacting your life. My goal is to equip you with effective coping strategies, help you uncover and live by your values, and support you in understanding and reshaping your perspectives.

  • My relationship counselling draws from the Gottman Method, known for its effectiveness in strengthening partnerships. I begin with three assessment sessions:

Session 1 (90 minutes): Together with your partner, we explore your relationship's dynamics, history, hopes, and fears.

Session 2 - Individual Interviews (90 minutes divided into two 45-minutes or two separately booked 60-minute sessions): Personal histories and individual perspectives on relationship.

Session 3 - Assessment Review and Treatment Planning (60 minutes): I share my assessment of your strengths and challenges as a couple. Then we collaborate to develop a plan to enhance your relationship.

Session 4 and onward - We use specific strategies to build up areas of weakness and use your strengths, fostering meaningful reconnection and growth.

  • I adhere to a holistic and adaptable approach to therapy, tailored to meet the specific needs of each client. This ensures a supportive and genuine therapeutic relationship. I offer a relaxed and conversational atmosphere, and I use humour, gentle challenging, and strategies aligned with what makes you tick. I highly value your feedback and remain open to adjusting my approach to align more closely with your therapeutic journey.

  • My sessions are built on the full 60 minutes, rather than the standard 50 minutes.

    $220 - 60 minutes

    $330 - 90 minutes

*Rates are set in accordance with the Psychologists' Association of Alberta's recommendations. We understand that therapy is a significant investment in your well-being and offer discussions about lower-cost counselling options for those in need.

At Just as You Are Counselling, I understand that life is imperfect and unique to each person. My approach is collaborative, direct and respectful, prioritizing your specific needs and objectives. I offer comprehensive services tailored to both individuals and couples, addressing a diverse array of concerns ranging from anxiety to betrayal. I am 2SLGBTQ+ affirming and welcome consensually nonmonogamous individuals and relationships.

Individual therapy is grounded in client-centred strategies, where I integrate cognitive therapies, mindfulness practices, and existential approaches. This blend is designed to enhance self-awareness, clarity and growth.

In couples' therapy sessions, I draw from the Gottman Method, beginning with thorough assessments to craft a customized path for each unique relationship.

Areas of Focus

  • Couples Therapy

    Relationship Therapy

At Just as You Are, I get that your relationship impacts every part of your life. Whether you’re raising children, pursuing career and life dreams, or simply coping with the major and minor stressors that life throws your way, your relationship can use support, tools and nourishment.

If you find that you and your partner are arguing more and more often, have had an abrupt breach of trust, or if you are simply exploring whether you can reconnect after drifting apart, I can help you rebuild.

I draw from the Gottman Method, using three initial assessment sessions to ensure that I tailor interventions to your specific needs. I also pull from a variety of evidence-based practices that effectively shift how you and your partner relate to each other, increase affection and understanding, and break through unresolved conflict where you feel stuck. When your partner starts to feel like your enemy, it’s time for a change. I can help.

  • Burnout

    Burnout

With some amazing advances in technology, we can be in touch around the clock. And because we can be in touch, sometimes there are expectations that we should be more and more responsive. It is more and more difficult to keep work and our personal lives separate. Balancing work, family, caregiving, friendships, personal growth… all while trying to be “enough,” can create a sense of hopelessness and exhaustion.

Burn out disconnects us from those we love, those we might want to be closer to, and ourselves! It’s harder to find joy in daily activities, and often resentment simmers underneath that others are living the life that you want.

If you’re tired, overwhelmed, overworked and struggling to find meaningful change, I invite you to reach out and see if I can support you. I use evidence-based therapies that can help you work through systemic barriers and find opportunities to alleviate your ongoing stress. I help you return to yourself and your loved ones.

  • People Pleasing

    People Pleasing

Do you often find yourself prioritizing what others want for fear that they will be upset? Do you chronically avoid conflict and try to read what others want or need in your relationships? Do you sometimes struggle to even know what it is that you want?

People pleasing is a survival strategy. Somewhere along the way, you learned that making others happy (and deprioritizing your own needs) was the easiest way for you to stay safe. Whether it was ensuring that your explosive teacher wouldn’t yell at you, keeping your bullies off your back, or making your struggling parent happy, people pleasing served its purpose.

At Just As You Are, I work with you to uncover your core values, develop strategies to retain your thoughtful and kind ways, while redirecting some of that compassion toward yourself for a more balanced life. It will take work, and it can be uncomfortable, but a simpler way of living is possible.

  • help for insomnia and sleep

    Insomnia

We have all struggled with sleep at some point in our lives. This can often lead to lower mood, increased frustration, and a general sense of hopelessness.

There are so many factors that can impact sleep - from getting enough sunlight, work, children, stress, or what we eat and drink. Sometimes the tricky part is figuring out what to do about it.

Using my training in CBT-I, the gold standard for treating insomnia, we can work on improving your experience of sleep. I will also explore possible root causes of your difficulty with sleep - if the cause is ongoing, then we can focus on the source of your stress.

If you are noticing changes in your mood, irritability, and you are struggling to focus, I can likely help. Reach out for a free consult.

I am Megan Duffy, a Registered Psychologist and the founder of Just as You Are. I am committed to offering a therapy experience that is both deeply personalized and evidence-based, supported by a rich background in psychology, social work, and my personal healing journey. Guiding adults and couples through their therapeutic paths is my heart’s work, and I use authenticity, humour, and compassionate challenging to ensure we establish a deep and trusting connection. Beyond my professional role, I find joy in life's quieter moments, like enjoying a good book, spending time with my sweet pup, Lexi, and embracing the natural beauty of Calgary's thunderstorms. Running is a cherished activity, symbolizing the balance between striving, endurance and the patience required for personal enrichment and professional dedication.

Before embarking on my career as a psychologist, I gained valuable experience as a Registered Social Worker. My academic path includes a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, a Diploma in Social Work, and a Master's of Counselling in Applied Psychology. This diverse educational background has equipped me with an extensive understanding of mental health, human behaviour and systems. In my practice, I emphasize a belief in the intrinsic value of every individual. I am dedicated to facilitating journeys of self-discovery and relational growth, recognizing the unique stories of those who step into my practice.

The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.
